While here conducting research at the museum, Lou Logan (Inupiaq) will give a talk entitled, “Building the Inupiaq Qayaq” on Wednesday, March 12th at 1pm. In his talk, he will share photographs of his boat building and his research to date on watercraft. With the delay of the planned internet outage, we are pleased to once again offer a Zoom option. The talk will be simultaneously in-person at the museum and on Zoom.
This is the first event in the 2025 The Share Your Culture Share / Your Research presentation series. The series runs through the spring and focuses on subjects connected to Alaska Native cultures.
Logan has been making kayaks since 2019 and currently has a solo live working exhibit at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau that involves building a qayaq right next to a historical example from the collection.
Logan applied for the Museums Alaska grant with a proposal to come to Sheldon Jackson Museum to access watercraft, including the traditional skin-on-frames qayaq (kayak) and umiak on exhibit. His objective is to take measurements and photographs, consult object records, and find inspiration for his own work. Thanks to the Access to Collections Grant awarded by Museums Alaska for allowing Logan to come to the Sheldon Jackson Museum in mid-March.
