In her talk, “Relief Printing as a Reflection of Traditional Indigenous Carving” on Friday, June 20 at 2:00 pm, Liz Chikayaasix Morrow (Unangax) will share her relief printing artwork as a reflection of traditional indigenous carving and her personal experience of being raised in Anchorage, Alaska – with feeling a disconnect from her ancestral heritage.

Morrow notes, “I was not raised with any connection to traditional cultural practices, navigating the waters of seeking connection to language, culture, and land while still being geographically separated. There’s a thread of the impact of colonization and the fact that I hold both indigeneity and colonizer within my heritage as a mixed Unangax person.”

She also traces the historical significance of relief printmaking back to ancient practices, discussing its longevity across various materials and cultures while acknowledging the challenges in preserving early examples due to decay.

This talk will be in-person at the Sheldon Jackson Museum and simultaneously on zoom.
