Guest Speaker Michael Beasley (Tlingit)

Join the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum for their Annual Meeting on January 26th at 2pm. The Annual Meeting lineup will include a brief board meeting at 2:30pm and a special guest presentation with Tlingit artist Daanawaak Michael Beasley entitled “Celebrating Alaska Native Watercraft” from 3-4pm.

Beasley’s presentation will explore design and construction techniques of the many types of watercraft used by Alaska Natives, focusing on the dugout canoes of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples of the northern Northwest Coast. Historical and contemporary watercraft will be covered. Beasley is a Raven of the L’uknax.adi (Coho) Clan, a journeyman artist, carver and canoe builder. He has focused on the study and implementation of classic Tlingit art forms since 1987 and has a BFA in Metal Design from the University of Washington.

At the Meeting, the Friends will provide light fare and refreshments, share highlights of the past year with the public, offer Friends members the chance to vote upon new board members, and recognize individuals who have been members for 5+ years with a special gift. Throughout the event, raffle tickets for prizes will be sold – winners to be announced during silent auction in the spring. There will be a chance for all who attend to win door prizes including some Alaska Native art. For additional information, please call (907) 747-6233 or email friendsofsjm@gmail.com .
