There is a series of programs on the calendar for the museum over the summer. Each artsit in the 2025 Alaska Native Artist Residency program will provide at least one artist talk and workshop.
Public artist talks include:
- “Relief Printing as a Reflection of Traditional Indigenous Carving” on Friday, June 20th at 2:00 pm with Liz Chikayaasix Morrow (Unangax)
- “My SJM Experience” on Wednesday, July 2nd at 2:30 pm with Liz Chikayaasix Morrow (Unangax)
- “How I Started” on Friday, August 1st at 2:00 pm with Shirley Hootch (Yup’ik)
- “Threads of Resurgence: Chilkat Weaving, Repatriation, and the Power of Indigenous female art in Alaska” on Friday, August 29th at 2:00 pm with Sydney Akagi (Llingit, Kiks.ádi)
- “Finding Beauty in Small Things” on Thursday, September 18th at 3:00 pm with Danielle Larsen (Koyukon Athabascan, Unangax, Inupiaq)
- “From the SJM Collection” on Friday, September 19th at 2:00 pm with Danielle Larsen (Koyukon Athabascan, Unangax, Inupiaq)
- “Legacies Threaded Together” at 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 2nd with Shanaskéi Lillian Jackson (Lingít & Koyukon Athabascan)
Public workshops include:
- A four hour relief printing workshop with Liz Chikayaasix Morrow (Unangax) on Wednesday, June 25th.
- A two-part maskette earring making class taught by Shirley Hootch (Yup’ik) Friday, July 18th and Friday, July 25th from 1-4pm both days, in-person only. This class is open to all ages.
- A Ravenstail weaving keychain making class taught by Sydney Akagi (Tlingit, Kiks.ádi) on Friday, August 15th from 11am-12pm and 1pm-4pm, in-person only. This class is open to ages 7+.
- A painting still life class taught by Danielle Larsen (Koyukon Athabascan, Unangax̂, & Inupiaq) on Thursday, Sept. 11th, 12:30pm-3:30pm, in-person and on zoom. This class is open to ages 10+. Students will need to buy some materials in advance of the class.
- A two-day beaded earring workshop with Shanaskéi Lillian Jackson (Llingít & Koyukon Athabascan) on Friday, Oct 3rd and Friday, Oct 10th.
