Jackson‘s artistic journey began at age 14 under the guidance of her grandmother, Lillian Olin, from Ruby, Alaska. Jackson’s grandmother taught her to work with what was available — mixing leftover beads and scraps of fabric — instilling both practical resourcefulness and deep cultural pride. These early lessons, passed down through generations of women in her family, continue to shape her work today. Shanaskéi is Teikwedi from Yakutat, Alaska. She is a mother of two and sibling to five brothers and sisters.

Shanaskéi Lillian Jackson is a Lingít & Koyukon Athabascan beader. She is the SJM Native Artist in Residence from September 24 – October 11, 2025.
