Announcing the 2025 Share Your Culture/ Share Your Research spring speaker series

The spring speaker series is upon us with Lou Logan (Inupiaq) on March 12th at 1:00pm giving a presentation titled, “Building the Inupiaq Qayaq”.  He will share photographs of his boat building and his research on watercraft. Logan has been making kayaks since 2019 and currently has a solo live working exhibit at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau that involves building a qayaq right next to a historical example from the collection. The talk will be only in-person at the museum due to the scheduled internet outage from March 9-19 in Sitka. The program will be recorded and archived on our YouTube channel.

Next month will have three SYC/SYR programs. Adrienne Fleek (Tlingit) on April 2nd at noon, zoom only, will give an earring tutorial focusing on Beading Edgework and Cabochon Application. Jan Steinbright (non-Indigenous) on April 10th at noon on zoom and in-person will talk on “The Forgotten Canoe” about a canoe made at the Sitka National Historical Park Visitors Center a few decades ago. Ursala Hudson (Tlingit) on April 30th at noon, zoom only, will speak to “Elevating Female-Gendered Art Practices for Collective Prosperity”.
