2025 Summer Programs and Events

There is a series of programs on the calendar for the museum over the summer. Each artsit in the 2025 Alaska Native Artist Residency program will provide at least one artist talk and workshop. 

Public artist talks include:

  • “Relief Printing as a Reflection of Traditional Indigenous Carving” on Friday, June 20th at 2:00 pm with Liz Chikayaasix Morrow (Unangax)
  • “My SJM Experience” on Wednesday, July 2nd at 2:30 pm with Liz Chikayaasix Morrow (Unangax)
  • “How I Started” on Friday, August 1st at 2:00 pm with Shirley Hootch (Yup’ik)
  • “Threads of Resurgence: Chilkat Weaving, Repatriation, and the Power of Indigenous female art in Alaska” on Friday, August 29th at 2:00 pm with Sydney Akagi (Llingit, Kiks.ádi) 
  • “Finding Beauty in Small Things” on Thursday, September 18th at 3:00 pm with Danielle Larsen (Koyukon Athabascan, Unangax, Inupiaq) 
  • “From the SJM Collection” on Friday, September 19th at 2:00 pm with Danielle Larsen (Koyukon Athabascan, Unangax, Inupiaq) 
  • “Legacies Threaded Together” at 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 2nd with Shanaskéi Lillian Jackson (Lingít & Koyukon Athabascan)

To register for a workshop, call the museum at (907) 747-8981. Classes fill up and fill up fast, so be sure to sign up early. Artist talks are open to the public with no reservations needed.
